WHAT:     To raise national awareness for obesity, the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Foundation are hosting the “Walk on the Capitol,” an event designed to draw attention to the need for expanded efforts in both the prevention and treatment of obesity. Every individual impacted by obesity is encouraged to attend this one mile walk at the National Mall. The Walk is hosted by the OAC and ASMBS Foundation and supported by various partnering non profit organizations.

WHO:       Caitlin Van Zandt, who stars on TV’s “The Guiding Light” and also had a recurring role on the “The Sopranos,” will be the guest speaker. Having struggled with obesity all her life, Ms. Van Zandt encompasses a true understanding of the many facets of obesity, such as health concerns, body image and much more.

WHY:        Obesity is a serious health epidemic that affects one in three Americans. It is estimated that more than 93 million Americans are obese, with that number predicted to climb to 120 million in the next five years. In order to address this epidemic, the “Walk on the Capitol” aims to recognize and promote increasing prevention efforts and improving access to safe and effective treatment options.

WHERE:   The National Mall (between 4th and 7th Streets), Washington, DC

WHEN:       Tuesday, June 17, 2008, 6:30 pm
