Antiedam and Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, African slaves in Texas finally received word of freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

The events at this battlefield September 17, 1862 when 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded , and led to Abraham Lincoln’s decision to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation at Antiedam a important historic event. President Abraham Lincoln visited Antiedam Battlefield two weeks after the battle and spent four days visiting General George McClellan, touring the battlefield and visiting the wounded of both sides. The Juneteenth program honors those who died and commemorates the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation and the June 19, 1865 ending of slavery. Program includes Ms. Edna Medford an Emancipation Proclamation scholar at Howard and Mr. Buz Carnahan (who wrote a book on the Emancipation Proclamation) and an interpretation of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment.
