On June 19, 1865, African slaves in Texas finally received word of freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

He also serves as secretary of the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization that promotes the appreciation and understanding of black history.
