In celebration of Women’s History Month this March, the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center in conjunction with Renaissance Productions and Tours hosts a women’s history bus tour of Baltimore to explore the innovative and exciting women of Maryland’s past. The tour takes place Friday, March 28 from 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. The bus meets at and returns to the Maryland State Department of Education’s Liberty Street Entrance at 6 North Liberty Street, Baltimore. Cost is $25 per person, which includes all museum and site admissions, presentations, and bus transportation (lunch is not provided). Advance reservations are required.
The tour visits five important Baltimore sites showcasing the accomplishments of Maryland women, including The Jewish Museum of Maryland (Henrietta Szold, humanitarian and founder of adult education for immigrants in the United States), The Flag House (Mary Young Pickersgill, flagmaker of the Star Spangled Banner that flew over Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812), Baltimore Women’s Industrial Exchange (founded in 1880 to help young women achieve financial independence), St. Frances Academy (Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange, founder of the first order of Black nuns, the Oblate Sisters of Providence, and St. Frances Academy), and Sharpe Street United Methodist Church (Lillie Carroll Jackson, Civil Rights activist who served as president of the Baltimore branch of the NAACP for 35 years). At each stop, a dramatic presentation or information sharing session explores the rich contributions of these remarkable Maryland women.
